Gateway’s youth in grades 7 to 12 are invited to a day of fellowship and adventure as we explore a portion of the scenic Pine Mountain Trail at F. D. Roosevelt State Park in west Georgia!
THE HIKE
This is a scenic hike that totals almost 4 miles. We will hike a portion of the Pine Mountain Trail west through some hilly forested areas. Along the way, we will stop for a short devotional time and discussion. We will end the hike at a scenic overlook area on top of Pine Mountain that was a favorite spot of President Franklin Roosevelt when he would stay in nearby Warm Springs, Georgia. The hike is along a mountainside with several climbs, so it is rated as moderate. Participants should pack a simple lunch to enjoy during the hike.
THE TRIP DETAILS
The trip leaders (more may be added as needed) are Mike Presley and Daniel Paulk.
We will meet at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 28 in the paved Gateway parking lot near the playground and church office entrance. We will carpool to the trailhead, which is about 1.5 hours away in Georgia, just over the state line near Interstate 85 and very close to Callaway Gardens.
Please note - There are no restroom facilities on the trail, but we will stop at the restrooms inside the F.D. Roosevelt State Park Office both before and after the hike. We will also stop at a fast-food restaurant in Valley, Alabama – just over the state line along Interstate 85 – for a quick dinner on the way home. Your teen should bring money for this dinner. We will return to Montgomery by early Saturday evening.
We will provide:
- Group first aid kit
- Insect repellant
- Extra water
You will need to bring:
- Small backpack to hold your water and snacks
- Water (at least 2 liters)
- High-protein snacks for the trail (energy bars, beef jerky, trail mix, etc.)
- A simple lunch (sandwich, Lunchables, etc.) to eat while we are hiking on the trail
- Light-colored, comfortable clothing – synthetic works best but cotton is fine for a day hike
- Sunscreen and a hat
- Hiking boots or sturdy athletic shoes with good soles
- Emergency poncho or rain jacket if there is a chance of rain
- Money for the dinner stop on the way home.
